Only two kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, Paddington's quaint cottages and quirky shops straddle hills and ridges and line roads that tumble and climb the gullies and peaks of the foothills of Mt Coot-tha. This is where we chose to walk and explore this week, taking advantage of Margot's knowledge gained as a Brisbane Greeter. The leafy area was originally home to the Turball Aboriginies. It became known as Ti-tree Flats when white settlement began in the 1850s, but was later named after the English borough of Paddington. We began our walk on Latrobe Terrace opposite the Latrobe Chapel the oldest church in the area, now beautifully restored and still of the original Primitive evangelist Church. Apparently the Primitive Methodist Christian faith was the first denomination to reach Australia in convict times. We felt duty-bound to heed the work of art sign that invited us to "Lounge Around". The glass mosaic covered couch by artist, Scott Harrower, provided an excellent vantage point to take in the view towards Government House. |
We completed our day with lunch and a short walk by the Brisbane River back in Yeronga and then a viewing of the movie about the Camino Walk called "The Way". For the next couple of months Margo will be abandoning us to walk this amazing trail and no matter how envious we are, we are terribly excited for her. Good luck Margot! And to sum up with a song ... Funky Town. |
