Our final walk together for the year was an evening outing in the city, mainly walking between Christmas lights and bars. We began with drinks at the Jade Buddha on the river and the $10 cocktails went down a treat. |
We then caught the light show at St Stephens Cathedral, after which it was back to the river for dinner and drinks at Riverland. On to King George Square for the City Hall lights, capped off by a nightcap atop the Emporium, where we had the best light show all night. Brisbane city shimmered in the cool night air. Our love for this beautiful city only grows as we discover more of it from many perspectives.

A heat wave, a full moon and Christmas closing in - all signs pointed to an evening walk followed by a festive feast. We began with afternoon tea near the Shorncliffe Pier, then a brisk 12 kilometre hike along the wild and windy foreshore. As we walked we realised our first hike of the year together was also here, so I guess we have come full circle. Dark clouds were gathering as we completed our walk, but we set up a festive spot on the pier, complete with lights and decorations. Leanne and Helen had exceeded all our catering expectations. It doesn't get much better than this. We may be the Hungry Hikers, but we rarely go hungry. Cheers everyone!
One way to beat the summer heat in Brisbane is to start early. So, we started early - very, very early - so early that we made the top of Mt Coot-tha just as the stars began to fade and the sky began to lighten. By the time the sun was breaking the horizon and burning through a familiar haze of smoke and dust from our brutal summer bushfire season, we had set up a breakfast table and poured champagne to greet the day. One thing for certain is that the Hungry Hikers know how to do it in style. While there was still a coolness in the air, we packed away our breakfast things and headed off on a brisk hike down the mountain to the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens and on to the nearby Toowong Cemetery. Toowong Cemetery officially opened in 1875 and features a number of cultural areas, historical trails and memorials. A couple of us had distant relatives buried here, but we were unable to locate them. We were too early for the help of the office, so we just enjoyed meandering through and admiring the weird, the wonderful, and the often sad headstones and memorials.
