Calypso Bay was very quiet. We had a toilet stop at the pub even though it was not yet open, did a spot of bird watching (plenty of pelicans), and walked along the canals. After a rather easy 9 kilometres we found ourselves back at Jacobs Well in time for brunch. Castaway Cafe was a delightful find, full of interesting art and delicious, fresh menu items. It was the perfect finale to this morning's walk. |
Bushfire season has meant our walks are more confined for now, so this week we headed to Jacob's Well on the water just outside Beenleigh. Although a little overcast, the rain held off and the temperature stayed pleasant. We began at Jacobs Well and walked to Calypso Bay before returning to a lovely brunch at Castaway Cafe.

This year's Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin Beach was a delightful assemble of awesome outdoor art scattered along the beach and boardwalk and rocks. Half of our group began with a hill climb while we waited for the others caught up in traffic due to an accident. The sculptures were a mixture of thought-provoking, confusing, fun, strange, beautiful creations, all taking full advantage of the stunning backdrop. If you want to see it, get down quick, for it ends this Sunday (22 September). After the recent bushfires and wind causing dusty, hazy, smokey days, it was lovely to strike a fresh, clear day to wander amongst such lovely works of art on the beach. We only managed 5 kilometres today, but as they involved a hill and sand, they count as double. Looking forward to next year's Swell Festival.
We had eagerly been anticipating 'Fire Gardens' by the Brisbane River, but our bushfire season has started badly. and the event was cancelled due to a total statewide fire ban. We decided not to waste the evening and did a late afternoon river walk ending at Southbank to catch the light and laser show, another Brisbane Festival event. We met at Mowbray Park and followed the river under the Story Bridge, under the cliffs at Kangaroo Point until we reached Southbank, where we decided we needed a little sustenance before proceeding on. Night was falling as we continued along the river to choose a spot in front of the Brisbane Eye to watch the laser show. The use of water fountains and light and lasers and story telling told of the history of this part of the river. A delicious Thai meal, followed by a ferry ride back to Mowbray Park added to our appreciation of this beautiful city. Love ya Brisbane!
