Well, I finally got to do it - the Great Whitsunday Walk The weather tormented us for days, but finally cleared enough for us to set off. Everything we read before walking the trail seemed to suggest walking from Brandy Creek to Airlie Beach, but Maree and I, in our infinite wisdom, could not see any sense in this. We chose to do it from Airlie instead, thereby conquering the climbs while we were still fresh. Best decision we ever made. Contemplating this walk? Do it our way, people. |
Magically, the clouds cleared and gave us a wonderful view across the Port of Airlie. Time for some photos, a quick bite to eat and some bragging on Facebook (Hey, we earned it.)
Reaching the Mount Hayward lookout was our next major milestone. This point meant we had climbed as high as we needed to go all trip. "Yeah, baby! Downhill from now on," was all we could think. Once again, the clouds kindly lifted and this time we were treated to a view of Shute Harbour and some of the islands, including the Molles. Magnificent! After another bite to eat, some more back-patting (hey, we had just covered around 15 kilometres of steep mountainous terrain), and a final Facebook fling (no more phone coverage after this point), we started the downward climb. |
From now on we began crossing streams and enjoyed a variation in the scenery. We eventually made it to Repulse Creek Camp, a very large open campsite with good facilities. Only 7.5 kilometres to go from here - a piece of cake really.
