We parked just inside the Raintree Glen entrance and had our morning tea picnic in an open field not far from the Southport Flying Club. As soon as we sat down we were approached by very bold birds, one making itself right at home on Jenny's walking pole. As well as the company of the birds, a large group of kangaroos were resting and grazing by the trees. |
mangroves to freshwater wetlands, flooded paperbark forests, eucalypt parkland, and grasslands, we were in for a very interesting day. Add to this the hundreds of birds, kangaroos, and a smattering echidnas and some elusive koalas, we couldn't have wished for a better outing.
Recent rains meant much greenery. Some parts of the reserve seemed so ancient and eerily quiet and remote that we felt as if we were in a place like Jurassic Park, or within the pages of a Jeannie Baker book, and half expected dinosaurs to appear. The serenity was blissful and it is hard to imagine how close it all is to suburbia. |
