A perfect day to walk by the Broadwater saw us enjoying the warm, winter sunshine under a magnificent blue sky.. We met at Quota Park at Biggera Waters and followed the path to Southport. The sea sparkled, and pelicans, seagulls and black swans enjoyed the peaceful setting as much as we did. We hardly noticed 8 kilometres slipping by before driving a short distance to enjoy morning tea at Jayne's mother's place overlooking a lovely canal. Life is good. |

Walking in South East Queensland is beautiful at this time of year. The temperature is just right and the sunshine and clear skies always elevate our mood and appreciation of our surroundings. This week, despite being down in numbers to three, we enjoyed some of the walking trails at Whites Hill. Whites Hill Reserve is over 170 hectares in size and is located approximately seven kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD. The variety of habitats within this bushland makes it a refuge for a diversity of wildlife. It is an important bushland remnant supporting a number of vegetation communities including eucalypt forest and dry rainforest. Sankey's Scrub, an important remnant of dry rainforest is home to some rare species of flora such as Shirley’s tuckeroo, Queensland nut, prickly snake vine and white beech. After climbing up and down a few tracks and enjoying the surrounds, we headed back to Jocelyn's place, where she had spent the morning creating a delicious lunch for us. A skin treatment had meant she had to stay out of the sun and we were grateful she put this time to good use. ,Botanica: Contemporary Art Outside returned to the City Botanic Gardens this month so we planned an early evening walk from Newfarm Park to reach the gardens after dark. As always, we appreciated our beautiful city at night and feel lucky to have it on our doorstep. This year saw ten large-scale installations in the Botanical Gardens, ranging from sculpture and projections through to augmented reality and interactive creations that transformed the gardens into an outdoor gallery. Only three Hungry Hikers this week, but we enjoyed a walking area new to us. Tallowwood Park in Upper Coomera is a large parkland beside a beautiful lake with sheltered picnic areas and toilet facilities. The walk around the lake itself in quite short, but very pretty and peaceful. We ventured further afield along pathways that took us by lovely creeks, more parklands and through bushland.
After a break for morning tea back at the park, we explored bushland on the opposite side of the road and enjoyed more winding paths that took us up and down some small hilly bits, along some back yard fences that back onto the bush, and past a few pleasant surprises such a lilly filled lagoon. All in all, it was a most pleasant day hiking through so much greenery under deep autumn blue skies. With plenty more pathways to explore in the area, we will definitely be returning here. |
