I must say we enjoyed spending a bit of time on The Hill with Maddie and Bear, a 2.5-metre high fibreglass sculpture of a child and her teddy bear. The lucky kid gets to admire that magnificent view every day. Gold Coast artist and Hollywood animator, John Cox, has captured that "relaxing day at the beach" feeling splendidly with his fun oversized sculpture.. |
With more warm winter sunshine and brilliant blue skies beckoning relentlessly, we ventured to Southport to begin this week's walk. The plan included a ride on the new Gold Coast G:link tram to its most southerly station and then a coastal walk back. Of course, as is our usual custom, we began with a picnic morning tea while we soaked up the scenery and contemplated our day ahead. The surroundings were so relaxing it was hard to get started. We began with more of a stroll than a walk, for there was much to admire and photograph. Not only did the sun look dazzling on the water, but the art work along the Southport Broadwater was very inviting. Southport Broadwater Parklands will be a focus of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with a number of sporting events including swimming, the marathon, gymnastics and basketball to be held there. The recently completed $60 million Southport Broadwater Parklands upgrade is very impressive. We finally dragged ourselves away from Maddie, but kept getting delayed by more fascinating works of art. We passed gigantic jumping pillows and lizard sculptures, colourful boomerangs and crazy crossings, inviting rest beds with enticing views. We finally dragged ourselves away from the Broadwater and caught the tram from downtown Southport. Brand new and squeaky clean, the tram runs 13 kilometres from end to end, linking the Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University with 16 stations en route to Broadbeach. The ride was smooth and quiet and well-used which was great to see. Alighting at Broadbeach, we made our way down to the beach front and hugged the seashore for our walk back to Southport. We stopped to lunch at a shady spot overlooking Surfers Paradise Beach and rounded off the day with another little afternoon tea picnic once back to our starting point. It's a hard life, but someone has to do it.
