We made a new discovery last week thanks to some research by Margot. We ventured to the corner of Forestdale Dr and Paradise Rd, Forestdale and explored the Sergeant Dan Stiller Reserve which runs along Oxley Creek. After our morning tea in the small picnic area we followed a paved path through Greenwood Lakes. The large lakes and terraced banks were carved out by many years of commercial sand operations, but the area is slowly returning to its natural condition and forms part of a key wildlife corridor running from Brisbane to Beaudesert. The boardwalk and viewing platform provide great opportunities for watching water birds on the lake area. Continuing north, the path becomes more rugged and boggy in parts, crosses under the Logan Motorway and passes through dry eucalypt forest. A monument at the northern end of the trail commemorates Sergeant Dan Stiller, a member of the Queensland Police Force who was killed in the line of duty. He was killed in 2010 by a jack-knifing truck while escorting a wide load on the Bruce Highway near Mount Larcom. The Sergeant Dan Stiller Memorial Reserve is protected against illegal trailbiking. Sergeant Stiller had been instrumental in working with council to deal with illegal trail biking while working at the Oxley Traffic Branch. After reaching the Wadeville St, Heathwood entrance to the reserve we followed Laurel Street, which runs along side the reserve, and then re-entered for the 6 kilometre return journey. A picnic lunch stop back at the lakes provided a pleasant break before heading home.
