Very popular with the locals, Café 22 in Main Street, is a great place for coffee, brunch or lunch. The food is fresh and tasty with some delicious Asian influences accompanying traditional fare. The Metropole Hotel, also in Main Street, may have a dowdy brown exterior, but don’t be put off. If you are looking for a hearty pub meal this is the place to go. It is renowned for not only the size of the meals, but also the quality. On another note, I am told that where the men tinkle is well worth a visit. Apparently when standing at the urinal, patrons get to view what’s happening in the bar through a one way mirror. | Colour Me Crazy in Dobbins Lane is a local institution so colourful that it can’t be ignored. It is a treasure trove of jewellery, clothing and furnishings begging to be explored. Venture down an even tinier lane to the shop’s right and behind you will feel as if you have stepped into a huge Balinese garden at Garden Art Alley (also accessible through the back of Cafe 22). If you continue through the town and follow the river through the countryside for about 25 kilometres you will come to the Peter Faust Dam and Lake Proserpine, a beautiful spot for a picnic, water sports and a bit of barramundi fishing. |
If you have a car and time to explore more, there are endless secret surprises and places of beauty to visit outside the town and main beach area.
