Today our group of Hungry Hikers doubled in size as friends and relations joined us in a walk around Tumbulgum led by local historian, Brian Breckenridge and his wife Sue. But of course we first started with morning tea. Tumbulgum, a picturesque village on the Tweed River, is celebrating 150 years since it was established to service the timber trade in the area. The town has a wonderful community spirit, as can be seen in its well cared for buildings and parks and the great number of local activities and events held. Brian is passionate about local history and made a significant contribution to the development of a Heritage Trail consisting of a number of permanent plaques with historical significance. Lunch, as usual, was a highlight of the day, with all meals rated 5 star Hungry Hiker quality at the Tumbulgum Tavern. We were a little worried when we heard that a group of 80 school children were booked in for lunch, but they were well-behaved and left soon after we arrived, so we enjoyed the usual peace of the river view from the tavern dining area. After lunch we enjoyed browsing through the town's interesting shops and some of us continued rambling out to the historic Tumbulgum Cemetery, the first in the Tweed Valley, and resting place of many of the area's European colonists from 1887 to 1947. The cemetery is accessed via steep steps, set in a secluded patch of beautiful subtropical rainforest, and is a lovely place to lose oneself in the past for a while. All in all, another top day in another beautiful part of our country. Tumbulgum is well worth a visit if you haven't been already.

We enjoyed the company of The Hungry Hikers and it was a pleasure to escort everyone around Tumbulgum's Heritage Trail and to share Tumbulgum's rich history with all of you. We look forward to you sharing your beautiful area with us. Keep smiling 😊😊:))
