With the weather still very hot, we walked late in the afternoon again. This week we headed up to Mt Tamborine where we thought it might be a little cooler, and walked Jenyns and Palm Grove Circuits. Palm Grove Circuit, as you would expect wove through palm groves and giant strangler figs. Jenyns Circuit led into drier eucalyptus forest. Hoop pines, brush box and grey gums were plentiful. Despite the gloomy afternoon light, the mood was anything but gloomy as we marvelled at the beauty surrounding us. It was a lovely walk, but still very humid and we worked up quite a sweat, so we were glad to finish and set up a somewhat scrumptious picnic, crack a bottle of bubbly, and watch the sunset over beautiful country side. Tamborine Mountain paragliding launch site overlooks the beautiful Canungra Valley and this is where we set up our picnic. Quite a few others also came to enjoy the sunset, made dramatic by the clouds present. Locals and visitors brought their fish and chips and blankets and made the most of the evening. Life IS great in the sunshine state!

Summer continues to hand out hot days here, so we continue to take late afternoon hikes as the days are cooler then. This week we drove to Helensvale and took the newly opened light rail to Southport. Quick, clean and relatively inexpensive, this will be a great way to get to the Commonwealth Games coming up soon. We walked through the Southport Parklands, which were full of families enjoying the seaside and park activities. After crossing the Nerang River, we hiked along the ocean front to Surfers Paradise where we came across night markets in full swing. Some taste testing later we left the crowds and walked as far as the Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club. Here we dined in their bistro, which was quite busy as it was members' night. Despite this, the service was fantastic and the food delicious. No wonder it is so popular. After dinner we caught the light rail back to Helensvale. Evenings are the way to go when summer is full on.
It may have come to your attention that the Hungry Hikers do not always hike. We do a lot of hiking, but we do a lot of eating too. Sometimes we even talk about hiking while eating. And so it was on this weekend when we decided to get together to talk about hiking while eating. Fun, fun, fun. Yum, yum, yum. Look out 2018 - here we come!
Brisbane has been scorching this summer, so the Hungry Hikers are planning late afternoon/early evening hikes to avoid the high temperatures. Today we began at Wilson's Lookout, overlooking the Story Bridge. We followed the river around as far as Victoria Bridge, then back via Southbank. It was still quite warm, though river breezes helped cool us a bit. By the time we wound our way back from Southbank across the Goodwill Bridge, the fairy light-filled trees on the QUT side were ablaze. The sun was setting by the time we made it back to Wilson's lookout, so we set up our picnic and enjoyed the ever-changing backdrop as night settled over Brisbane. We never cease to enjoy this beautiful city. Looking forward to another fantastic year of Wednesday hikes with this bunch.
