Castle Hill
Castle Hill is a pink granite monolith, rising to a height of 286 metres. In 1980 a group of high school students tried to add enough soil to the top to make it high enough to be classified as a mountain. They achieved success and it was officially a mountain for a short time. Although it is back to hill status, it feels like a mountain when climbing it. |
The Strand
With stinger season still officially open, I chose to swim in the fully protected Rock Pool at Kissing Point, though many were also swimming in the two stinger proof net enclosures along The Strand. The Rock Pool constantly pumps sea water in with a special pumping system imported from Sweden. The pool, in a beach setting, is greater in size than 10 Olympic pools and has the entire volume replaced every three hours. |

The Tea Rooms are set in one of the few remaining slab sided inns left standing in Australia. Once they provided a welcome stop to travellers and their horses and bullock teams on the way to the goldfields. Now they provide delicious food and a welcome escape from the brutal Townsville heat to motorists, cyclists and hikers. Being a Sunday when we visited, the garden tables were filled with people enjoying delicious breakfasts, brunches and morning teas.
