While four of our members are off hiking on Maria Island in Tasmania, the remaining Hungry Hikers took a hike through the city following the trail of "Curiocities" - a series of over 60 installations based on science, engineering, technology, art, and maths. We began at GOMA, following the river along the Southbank, then crossed to the City Botanic Gardens and ended in the Queen Street Mall. If you wish to take a look you only have a few days left as the displays end on 28 March. We completed our circuit of "Curiosities" with a visit to the Cross River Rail Experience in Albert Street, which is well worth a visit to satisfy any curiosity you may have about this project. The Cross River Rail Experience Centre is a community engagement and education hub developed in partnership with Queensland Museum, providing detailed project information, digital engagement experiences and learning opportunities. The available films were interesting, bu we especially loved the virtual experience of donning glasses to take. a trip through the tunnel and stations. The centre is free and open every day except Tuesdays.

Again all seven Hungry Hikers were together, but this will be the last time for a while as several are about to go hiking away - some to Tasmania and one of us to the Snowy Mountains. Two were sneaking off to celebrate special birthdays out of the limelight, but we couldn't let that happen without a fanfare, could we? Breakfast by the Brisbane River to toast the sunrise and two special birthdays was the order of the day. Luckily the rain held off, and though the sun hid behind clouds, it was still a perfect morning. Helen and Margot will be celebrating their 70th birthdays this month and damn, they look good for 70. Must be all that walking and laughter that keeps them young and fit.
After a delicious breakfast of many courses we packed up and decided we should walk some of those kilojoules off. We checked all the new work going on along Southbank and the city side of the river before heading home for an afternoon nap. Hey, don't judge - we are all 'nana nap' ages. |
