Mt Mitchell is one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, and we were looking forward to a mountain hike as we hadn't been into the bush for a while.. We followed the Cunningham Highway from Brisbane towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap we stopped at a picnic area for morning tea before our hike up the mountain.. We then returned the short distance to the carpark for hikers at the crest of the gap. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so be warned - cross with care. The track passes through a variety of bush, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and some impressive natural rock formations, making it an incredibly scenic walk, especially when combined with the breathtaking views in all directions as you climb. The track is clearly marked and the climb not too taxing, though there were many fallen trees we had to clamber over. We completed the hike in three and a half hours, including breaks, photo stops, and waiting for wildlife to cross our paths. On the return drive we stopped at Moogerah Dam for a picnic lunch and then followed a scenic route through the Kalbar district, which was lush and green. Unfortunately we had just missed the fields exploding in sunflowers, but the area still exploding with beauty.

We have done this walk many times, but never tire of it. We took a ferry from Southbank to Bretts Wharf and the rain held off as we headed back towards the city. A stop at Breakfast Creek to try a new cafe for morning tea was welcome, but as we continued on, the weather became more and more muggy. We decided we had sweated enough by the time we reached New Farm Park, so we caught a ferry back to the city in time to try the November lunch special at the Treasury.
This week we skipped our hiking day and joined forces with another hiking group to celebrate the Melbourne Cup. It was a lovely relaxed day filled with good food, good friends and good fun.
