Sunday in the sunshine state was sunny indeed and was the sort of day that begged one to be beachside. We headed off bright and early to Surfers Paradise to enjoy the sunshine and seek out the sand sculptures along the foreshore that form part of this year's Gold Coast sand trail. The Australian Sand Sculpting Championships is an annual event in Surfers and this year's theme was Myths, Legends and Fairytales. Ten professional sculptors transformed over 100 tonnes of sand into massive, magical works of art that brought the beachfront alive with some very interesting mythical characters and creatures. It can be demanding work being an art critic, so after carefully scrutinising all the sculptures we decided a hearty breakfast was called for. The Surfers Beach Cafe and Takeaway overlooking the beach proved to be an excellent choice to appease our appetites. I can highly recommend their $5 bacon and eggs special. It came out cooked to perfection and served with a smile. We were suitably impressed and well fuelled up to take a further walk along the beach which was now alive with swimmers and sunworshippers and a gazillion nippers having fun playing games and learning the art of lifesaving. They were gathered in their various clubs spread along the shore, fully engaged in the great outdoors. |
I love this part of the world - always have, always will. A day at the Gold Coast - pure gold.
