Fabricated from waste concrete, each Kooka! includes artwork by 13 local Brisbane artists, celebrating the Paddington terraces neighbourhood centre’s unique character and heritage, |
Paddington is a residential suburb three km west of central Brisbane. It was named after a farm which was named after the borough of Paddington, England. Given and Latrobe Terraces are Paddington's main activity strips and it was here we walked after taking a bus to the top of Latrobe Terrace. We walked down tree-lined avenues enjoying the panoramic views of the city, the gorgeous colours of the jacaranda trees in full bloom, the vibrant shops, the attractive old Queenslanders, workers' cottages and heritage buildings, the many beautiful murals and the newly installed trail of colourfully painted kookaburras. Trammies Corner is a quaint small park, so named as a tribute to the tram drivers who used to frequent the stores in the vicinity at Latrobe Tce during smoko. One of the city’s main depots was down the road where Paddington Central now stands and it was this depot that was destroyed by fire in 1962 thus striking the death knell for Brisbane’s trams. The Paddington Terraces Kooka! Trail shows off Kooka! and its offspring 'baby' Kooka! in a variety of combinations in 16 locations along Given and Latrobe Terraces. Passing the Suncorp Stadium we took some time out to pose with some Queensland State of Origin champions, before continuing on to admire the Roma Street Parklands. After 11 enjoyable kilometres we enjoyed a leisurely lunch of pizza, pasta and wine at the Southbank.
