This week the Hungry Hikers headed to Burbank to walk in this part of the Brisbane Koala Bushlands. These bushlands stretch from Belmont to Burbank, providing significant koala habitat. A lovely picnic area greeted us at the Alperton Road entrance. There are two large shelters with seating, art work and information displays, as well as toilets, barbeques and picnic tables scattered around. After morning tea in this pleasant setting we walked the Horse Trail, a 12 kilometre return multi-use track through patches of rainforest along Stockyard and Tingalpa Creeks and open forests on adjoining ridgelines. After lunch back at the picnic area, we walked the shorter Stockyard Creek Circuit, which drops down to skirt Stockyard Creek passing through more open forest and a strand of melaleucas near the water. Despite this being a significant koala habitat, the only ones we saw today were in the art works at the picnic grounds. We did, however, see plenty of signs of their presence in the three-toed scratch marks on the eucalypt trunks. We did see a few wallabies and birds, but the wildlife was generally very quiet and hidden today. This was a pleasant area to visit, but it was very dry. The creeks and waterholes had very little water in them. After rain I am sure the bushlands would be more lush and the water courses flowing. The tracks are well maintained and very well signposted, which is fortunate as there are many side tracks to get lost on. All in all, another great place close to home well worth a visit.
